Leylah Fernandez is telling potential dates not to be afraid of her father as the Canadian tennis star says Jorge may only look like an unwelcoming person but that the reality is different.
In case you missed it, the 2021 US Open finalist admitted in an Instagram video last week that she had never been on a date and that she would like to experience it during the Montreal tournament. In the same post, the 22-year-old invited everyone interested to reach out and present themselves, before also remarking that those who meet the initial criteria might also have to get the green light from her father Jorge, who also serves as her coach.
After posting the video, Fernandez kicked off her Washington campaign, where she has been through to the semifinal. Asked how her search for a date is going, the Canadian funnily implied that some may be afraid to reach out because they have a certain view of her father.
Fernandez: It doesn't help that my dad doesn't look welcoming... But he is
"I mean, I think, one, a lot of people think I'm very focused in tennis, and I am. I am very focused in tennis. Sometimes they think, 'Okay, I can't approach her and ask her out,' and it doesn't help that also my dad doesn't look that welcoming. He's very welcoming. Don't get me wrong," the 22-year-old claimed.
"He's very welcoming. He's funny to be around with, but the initial, like, picture of him is not that great. So I feel like sometimes I kind of had to do the first step, like, 'Guys, I want to experience this. Help me out a little bit."'
Truth be told, Jorge has had some moments when he would be caught with annoyed and frustrated looks on his face. That may be the reason why some think of him as "an unwelcoming" man.
Since the main action in Montreal is starting on Tuesday, it won't take long before we get to know whether or not Fernandez found herself a date.
