WWE fans were shocked when reports surfaced claiming Alberto El Patronformerly known as Alberto Del Riowas signed as part of WWEs deal involving AAA. But now, theres a major update casting doubt on how involved WWE really is in the decision.
The initial report from Super Luchas stated that WWE had already signed several top names from AAA, including Alberto El Patron, Hijo del Vikingo, Hijo de Dr. Wagner, La Parka, La Hiedra, Lady Flammer, Lady Maravilla, and Nio Hamburguesa. This set off immediate backlash online, especially over El Patrons involvement given his controversial past.
But Lucha Blog is now pushing back on that narrative, stating: To my knowledge, WWE did not give Alberto a contract. AAA signed Alberto to a contract when they decided to build the promotion around him for the last year, and WWE will assume that contract when they take over the company. I dont think decisions have been made past that.
So, for now, WWE hasnt officially signed Del Rio to a new contractits just inheriting AAAs existing deal as part of the reported acquisition. Whether WWE plans to feature him on TV remains to be seen.
Del Rios history with WWE is filled with baggage. He was released in 2014 after slapping a social media employee over an alleged racist remark, only to return in 2015 and then leave again in 2016 due to creative frustrations and a Wellness Policy violation. His legal issues in 2020 further damaged his standing in the industry, despite charges being dropped in 2021.
The rest of the talent reportedly brought into the fold is far less controversial. Names like Hijo del Vikingo and Lady Flammer represent a new era of stars that could help WWE expand its influence in Latin America. Rey Mysterio even appeared via video at AAAs latest event, declaring, The future flies here.
But make no mistakeAlberto El Patrons presence in this deal is far from a WWE endorsement, at least not yet.
