Rory McIlroy made history this season.

After winning the Masters and completing the career Grand Slam, the Northern Irish golfer triumphed with the European team at the Ryder Cup.

Although several months have passed since the end of the last edition, the passions have still not subsided, and the players remember their great performance with nostalgia.

The team leader, Rory McIlroy, still fondly remembers the victory, even though he was insulted and belittled by the American crowd. Speaking to Sky Sports, McIlroy points out that the Ryder Cup was one of the most difficult challenges in his career, but that he was able to show character and courage and ultimately help his team win.

"The Ryder Cup at Bethpage was probably the toughest mentally that I've ever had to be," McIlroy told Sky Sports. "As much as you want to go through those few days and not let it get to you, I think you're only human if at some point something gets through and you react."

McIlroy emphasizes that he had a good feeling during the tournament, and those situations further motivated him to play great.

The 36-year-old doesn't begrudge the American crowd too much, given that, as the leader of the team, he knew he was likely to be targeted, which only confirms how important a figure he was to the team.

"Reflecting back on all this, you want to try to take it as a compliment that they targeted me more so than anyone else because it means that they saw me as a threat, which is ultimately a good thing."

Next edition

After the end of this year's Ryder Cup, many who analyzed the last edition are wondering if the American audience had to react differently and if they really only achieved a counter-effect with their behavior.

The Europeans gave them a clear answer, as if they wanted to provide more than the maximum in such a hostile atmosphere.

It will be interesting to see how Europeans treat American golfers in two years.
