Iga Swiatek says she was simply fully locked in against Amanda Anisimova and did not want to give anything "free" to her rival in such an important match.
Playing in her maiden Wimbledon final, Swiatek delivered one of the most impressive displays in a Grand Slam final ever as she needed just 58 minutes to double bagel Anisimova 6-0 6-0.
During the match, Anisimova had game points in only one game and didn't clinch any break points. With the Pole leading 2-0 in the first set, the American had a total of four game points - but didn't convert any. The rest of the match was the pure dominance of the world No. 2, who stormed past her rival to collect her sixth Grand Slam title.
By beating Anisimova 6-0 6-0, Swiatek became the first player to register such a scoreline in a Wimbledon final since 1911. Also, it was the first time since Monica Seles in 1988 to double bagel a rival in a Grand Slam title match.
Afterward, the 24-year-old American broke out in tears, and some suggested that the Pole should have conceded at least one game.
Swiatek: I wasn't thinking about how it looks, I was just playing...
I wasnt really thinking about how it looks, I was just playing, and I didnt want to give any points for free. Its a Wimbledon final, I wanted to win it really bad," the 24-year-old Pole told The Guardian.
After, for sure, there were a lot of crazy things happening. I remember all these interviews about the score, journalists asking questions if I should let Amanda win one game or something like that. It was pretty different. I can only say that this tournament shows tennis is [such a] mental sport."
A month and a half after the Wimbledon final, Swiatek and Anisimova clashed once again. This time, the American performed much better and upset the former world No. 1 6-4 6-3 in the US Open quarterfinal.
