Jannik Sinner insists he won't be taking Alex de Minaur for granted in their upcoming ATP Finals clash since he doesn't believe that what happened in their past meetings will mean much when they take to the court on Saturday.
On Friday, the Italian tennis star ousted Ben Shelton 6-3 7-6 (3) to complete Bjorn Borg Group with a 3-0 record and progress into his third consecutive knock-out stage at the season-ending tournament.
There, Sinner will battle against seventh-ranked de Minaur, who stunningly reached the semifinal stage with a 1-2 record in the group. So far in his career, the four-time Grand Slam champion has been absolutely dominant in his matches against de Minaur, beating him 12 times in as many matches. The thing that makes the Italian's head-to-head against the world No. 7 even more dominant is the fact that he has only twice lost a set to the Australian.
Sinner asked if his 12-0 record vs de Minaur has any bearing going into their ATP Finals match
"No. I mean, of course what happened happened. In a way we both know what happened in the past between us in the matches we've played. He has been close in couple of matches. Especially this season we played always in different situations on the court, different type of courts. Let's see what's coming out tomorrow," the world No. 2 said.
"As I said, he had a very tough loss here where he felt a bit down, but it has changed very, very quickly one day. This shows how hard tennis is, that every day is different. But again, if I see the match against Taylor, one of the best matches he has played this season, it shows that tennis really can change a lot from one day to the other."
This year, Sinner routed de Minaur in straight sets at the Australian Open and Vienna. In Beijing, the Australian managed to snatch one set from the Italian before the world No. 2 completed a 6-3 4-6 6-2 win.
