The San Antonio Spurs impressive 5-1 start has hit its first real test, with standout rookie Dylan Harper set to miss several weeks after suffering a calf strain in Sundays win over the Phoenix Suns.
Harper, who has quickly established himself as a perfect on-court partner for Victor Wembanyama, left the game limping in the second quarter after trying to disrupt a post entry pass and prevent a dunk attempt by Nick Richards.
He was later seen leaving the arena in a walking boot, sparking initial fears of a serious injury.
Those fears were eased on Monday when imaging revealed no structural damage. An MRI on Monday revealed Harper avoided a significant absence, as reported by ESPNs Shams Charania.
The Spurs confirmed the diagnosis soon after, stating that Harper will be sidelined for multiple weeks, but emphasizing that its purely precautionary. The organization and fans alike breathed a sigh of relief knowing the injury wasnt more severe.
Through six games, the 19-year-old guard has averaged 14 points, four rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game off the bench, numbers that only begin to tell the story of his impact. Harpers smooth, composed style and his 35.7 percent shooting from deep have made him look far more seasoned than a rookie.
There was already chemistry brewing between Harper and Wembanyama, with the two forming one of the most exciting young duos in the league. His absence, however, adds to a growing list of injuries for San Antonio, who remain without DeAaron Fox, still recovering from a hamstring issue.
That means Stephon Castle will carry a heavier load in the backcourt until the Spurs get healthy again. For a team that has already shown so much promise, keeping its young core intact will be key to maintaining momentum.
