After yet another injury that slowed down his career, Matteo Berrettini is trying to find his best shape in view of the 2026 season which will also be decisive for his future. He suffered an abdominal injury during the Mutua Madrid Open, but continued to play ending up worsening his issue and having to miss both Roland Garros and the US Open.

The former world number 6 participated in the Wimbledon Championships being his favorite tournament, where he reached the final in the 2021 edition, but was defeated already in the first round and admitted that he needed a break from tennis because something in his mind had broken.

The Italian tennis player returned to action during the Asian swing and alternated good performances with premature losses, giving the feeling that he still needs time to return to the level he deserves.

Berrettini is very confident

The star from Romeplayed the Vienna ATP 500 this week, stopping out against Alex de Minaur in the quarterfinals after using a lot of energy against British ace Cameron Norrie the previous day.

"My body gave me good signals" - Berrettini confessed in his press conference. "I didn't feel 100% shape after the battles of the previous rounds, but I'm proud of how I fought and I also had chances to overturn the momentum of the match. I still need time to get back to my best level, but I'm already well on my way to starting point," added the former Wimbledon finalist.

Matteo's main goal will be to recover further shape in time for the Davis Cup Finals in Bologna, in which he will try to drag Italy in the absence of world number 2 Jannik Sinner. Berrettini had played an important role in Malaga last year and hopes to make his contribution in this edition in front of his home fans as well. The atmosphere of the Davis Cup tends to enhance the game of the champion from Rome. Italy will face Austria in the quarterfinals and will be clear the favorite.
