Daniil Medvedev had some selected words for the chair umpire before picking up a surprise Vienna round-of-16 loss as the world No. 14 bluntly told the umpire that he probably would not have given him a time violation had he "used his IQ and brain" to think before making the call.
Medvedev, who won the Almaty Open last week, got broken in the opening game of the match by world No. 36 Corentin Moutet but managed to get the break back and ultimately force a first-set tie-break. After winning a lengthy point at 2-1, the Russian took a bit more time before resuming play, and he was hit by a time violation.
The call made Medvedev visibly frustrated and he lost the next two points as Moutet tied the score in the tie-break to three points apiece. Then, during the changeover, the 2021 US Open champion made sure to let the chair umpire hear it.

Medvedev rips the umpire: Maybe you could use your brain... I don't know if you can't
How was I supposed to go from here to there? I didnt even ask for the towel. Maybe you can use little bit of your IQ, I was at the net. Maybe you can use your brain, I know the system calls everything but you could use your brain. I dont know if you dont want to try or if you cant, I dont know which of the two options is the right one; I have my opinion, but I wont tell you," the former world No. 1 told the chair umpire during his rant.
Medvedev lost the next four points of the tie-break and dropped the first set. The sixth-seeded Russian then also failed to stage a comeback as Moutet completed a 7-6 (3) 6-4 win.

For Medvedev, it was certainly disappointing to lose since he was in fine form and aiming to clinch back-to-back titles.
