WWE and AEW have been after the same crop of free agents for over five years. One of AEWs original signings, Darby Allin, also had to make a decision.

During an appearance on the Ariel Helwani Show, Darby Allin reflected on the past few years of his life, especially in his pro wrestling career. He stated very bluntly that he blew Codys phone up to get himself in AEW.

Darby Allin made a point to say that AEWs creative freedom was a huge selling point for him. He wanted to be a part of what Tony Khan was doing, so he ended up getting his hands on Cody Rhodes phone number, and he called him to make that pitch.

When asked if he had an opportunity in WWE, Darby Allin confirmed that he did. With his connections with EVOLVE at the time, he certainly had a pipeline. However, he saw the writing on the wall, and his future place on 205 Live, so he went with AEW.

When Ariel Helwani asked Darby Allin what writing he saw on the wall, the AEW star replied, 205 Live before laughing. He went on to explain that, my money is in David and Goliath matches, so when I heard AEW was starting I went, nope, I gotta go.'

Well never know how different things would have been if WWE had signed Darby Allin. His unique character could have brought him to new heights on the WWE roster. Instead, he decided to go with Tony Khan where he knew his creative vision would be upheld.
