Alexander Zverev certainly cannot be satisfied with the results obtained this season, which should have sanctioned his definitive consecration with the victory in a Grand Slam tournament. The German ace reached the final at Melbourne Park earlier this year, but was unable to break the curse that plagues him, losing to former world No.1 Jannik Sinner very sharply and sinking into a serious crisis in the following months.
The world number 3 quickly lost all his certainties and despite the improvements made in the latter part of last year his performances were disappointing and also affected his motivation. The champion from Hamburg had the chance to climb to the top of the ATP rankings thanks to the three-month ban inflicted on Sinner by WADA, but he did not take advantage of that chance either and lifted only one trophy in 2025 on the red clay of Munich.
Immediately after the Wimbledon Championships in which he was eliminated already in the first round Sascha traveled to Manacor to work together with Toni Nadal and finally solve his problems, but his results in the Masters 1000 in Toronto and Cincinnati and at the US Open did not live up to expectations.
Zverev continues to complain
In his interview after his debut at the Shanghai Masters 1000, the former world number 2 accused the tournament organizers of having made the surfaces all the same to favor the dominance of Sinner and Alcaraz.
Through his official X profile, top analyst Jos Moron commented on Zverev's recent statements: "Sascha basically repeated what Roger Federer had said a short time ago. His statements are partly shareable, but there is a feeling that he wants to cling to anything to justify the fact that other players win much more than him. In the Masters 1000 tournaments with the fastest surface such as Miami, Toronto and Cincinnati, Alexander's results have been quite disappointing."
The German player has been experiencing back discomfort in recent weeks and injured his foot during his first match in Shanghai.
