Eva Lys may have enjoyed her career-best WTA 1000 run in Beijing but she was still subjected to some vile verbal abuse following her loss to Coco Gauff.
In her second Beijing appearance, the Lys clinched a couple of very notable wins after triumphing against 2022 Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina and also overcoming recent Monterrey winner Iva Jovic. The 66th-ranked German also beat Ruien Zhang and McCartney Kessler en route to making her first WTA 1000 quarterfinal. There, the 23-year-old was stopped by Gauff, who claimed a 6-3 6-4 win.
For Lys, it was an outstanding Beijing run despite the Gauff loss. But when she picked up her phone following her China Open exit, she received one pretty disgusting message, where an angry bettor insulted her but also her family.

The rising German tennis star took a screenshot of the message - posted it on her Instagram Story - and captioned it: "And let's not forget the reality whenever we lose a match."
Lys didn't only make her first WTA 1000 quarterfinal, but she also earned a top-50 spot
By coming back to beat Kessler 4-6 6-1 6-2 in the Beijing round-of-16, the German - who entered the China Open ranked at No. 66 in the world - secured breaking into the top-50 for the first time in her career.
Im trying to hold back my tears. It was so fun playing in front of you guys... I didnt expect to have a lot of fans in China. I really appreciate that. It means so much to be in my first WTA 1000 quarterfinal," Lys said after beating Kessler to make her first WTA 1000 quarterfinal and secure a top-50 ranking.
