Rory McIlroy has been one of the Ryder Cup's biggest stars. The American fans watching the competition at Bethpage were fierce with the Northern Irishman, who didn't hesitate to respond. McIlroy, 36, had to endure all kinds of shouts and insults, and even witnessed a beer thrown at his wife.

Visibly emotional, the Northern Irishman spoke about what happened after being crowned Ryder Cup champion, following a tough day of singles in which Europe suffered more than expected. McIlroy, key in the first two days, was unable to win his match against world number 1 Scottie Scheffler.
"We shouldn't accept this in golf. It's a sport that brings people together, that teaches you valuable life lessons. It teaches you to respect people, and we didn't see that this week. What happened is not acceptable in the Ryder Cup," McIlroy noted.

The next edition of the Ryder Cup will be held in Limerick, Ireland, and the golfer is confident that the attitude of Europeans will be completely different from what he saw these days in New York. "Come and cheer on your team. If I were American, this kind of behavior would bother me. I haven't heard much encouragement for Scottie, but I have heard a lot of shouts against me. Cheer on your players..." he noted. Finally, he acknowledged that "it's been a tough week for all of us, but at the same time, we've silenced them with our play and tried to respond with class. I think we've achieved that."
The rules of golf are relatively complicated compared to other sports because they are played outdoors, close to nature and animals. Respecting the rules is a fundamental element in the game of golf, which, almost always based on self-control and the free conscience of the players, often sees distorted results, sometimes consciously, but often unconsciously or through carelessness, due to the failure of many players to comply with the rules of the game. In addition to the rules, golf adheres to a code of conduct, known as etiquette, which generally means playing the game with due respect for the golf course and other players. Etiquette is an essential component of this sport.
