Lorenzo Musetti is certainly going through the best season of his young career, having made significant improvements from a technical and mental point of view. The Italian ace has achieved very brilliant results especially during the red clay season, in which he reached the semifinals in Madrid, Rome and especially at Roland Garros, without forgetting the sensational final at the Monte Carlo Masters 1000 during the spring.

An injury forced him to retire during the French Open semifinal against Carlos Alcaraz, when he was playing truly impressive tennis. That issue affected his performance in the following months as well, preventing him from going beyond the first round at the Wimbledon Championships and conditioning him during the Masters 1000 in Toronto and Cincinnati during the summer.

He returned to his best level at the US Open, the last Grand Slam of the season, in which he reached the quarterfinals for the first time in his career (in New York) losing only to his compatriot Jannik Sinner on the iconic Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Musetti hasn't won a title in three years

The player from Carrara also put in outstanding performances at the Chengdu ATP 250 this week and seemed to be ready for the third title of his career. Lorenzo was favored against Chilean star Alejandro Tabilo in the final, but lost in the decisive tiebreak after wasting two match points in the twelfth game of the third set. Musetti has won two ATP titles so far, but has not lifted a trophy since 2022 and has lost the last five finals played.

"It's not easy to talk right now, unfortunately it wasn't my day" - confessed the Italian player after losing this electrifying battle against Tabilo. "The match was intense from the first to the last point and we both gave our best, but someone has to lose in tennis and it was my turn today. I'm proud of the way I'm working and I think I'll win a tournament again very soon. Thank you to everyone who contributes to making this tournament so special," he concluded.
