Daniil Medvedev started working with a new team immediately after the US Open, hoping to get out of the serious crisis he has been plunged into over the past two years. The Russian ace does not even resemble the amazing player who won in New York four years ago and rose to the top of the ATP rankings, having totally lost his certainties and having become vulnerable even against second-tier players.
Before the start of the Hangzhou ATP 250, the champion from Moscow had confided that he had practiced very well and that he was very confident about his level. After a rather brilliant debut, the former world No.1 who hasn't won a title in more than two years was eliminated by local idol Yibing Wu at the end of a three-hour battle.
The Russian star was ahead by a set and a break against an opponent who currently occupies the 196th position in the ATP rankings, before suffering a shocking comeback that highlighted all his current difficulties. Medvedev's game no longer scares his rivals and his behavior on the court exemplifies his enormous frustration, which has made him the author of some unedifying episodes in recent months (the last case was at the US Open a few weeks ago).
Kafelnikov slams Medvedev
According to a legend of the caliber of Yevgeny Kafelnikov, it will be impossible for Daniil to solve his problems if he does not change his approach.
"No person can help him if he doesn't start changing his mental attitude and working hard," said the Russian without any hesitation.
The hope of fans and insiders is that the former world number 1 can return to show his best version, because it would be a real shame if a player of his caliber was already on a downward trajectory. This last part of the season will be important for the Russian especially from the point of view of confidence, in view of a 2026 season that will also decide his future.
