For Djokovic, the moment between the two great rivals was surprising and inspiring. Sharapova was officially inducted into the IHOF family, and her longtime rival Williams was in Newportto celebrate the occasion.
Novak praised Maria while also noting how special it was to see Serena involved. Djokovic reminded that Williams had never officially retired, playfully challenging her to return next season.
The Serb enjoyed the American's presence at the ceremony, calling it a wonderful gesture, especially given the intensity of their rivalry. Many perceived Maria and Serena as very different personalities.
For Novak, they were in fact quite similar, driven by the same goals and competing on the same stage for years. The Newport ceremony moment showcased the respect born out of rivalry.
Sharapova's legacy was formally recognized, and Williams' appearance added an extra touch to the event. The Americanhas not played since the 2022 US Open, giving birth to her second daughterAdira River Ohaniana year later.
"It was a surprising but very nice gesture from Serena to be there for Maria. They had a very intense rivalry and incredible battles over the years. People thought they were very different, but in reality, they were very similar.
They wanted the same thing and competed on the same circuit for many years. Maria deserves it. It was also great to see Serena. She likes challenges. Remember, she has not retired officially.
I challenge her to come back on tour next year," Novak Djokovic said.
