The PGA Tour has been changing the rules for years when it comes to the FedEx Cup, i.e. the PGA Tour Finals. The points system that was in force until 2019 did not really cause positive reactions, given that the best players had the starting shots, i.e. they started the tournament with an advantage.

The best player of the season started the tournament at minus 10, the second at minus 8, the third at minus 7, which did not really arouse enthusiasm among the fans.

They wanted the surprise factor, not a certain advantage.

However, since 2025, the system has changed and all golfers start with even par, i.e. they no longer have bonus shots at the start.

Many will think that this system does not suit top golfers like Scottie Scheffler, but the popular golfer firmly believes that this system is good, mainly because of the fans who have been waiting for such changes for years.

Scottie stressed how difficult it is to earn a place in the final tournament, given that only the top 30 players can secure a place at the Tour Championship.

"Yeah, I guess no more sandbagging for me at the end of the year. (Laughter).

I was not a huge fan of the starting strokes format. I was a fan of the points format, but I understand why people wanted to move away from that with FedEx being a huge sponsor and having to give out two trophies at the end of the week and explaining the season long race. This to me is a much simpler format to end the year.

In order to qualify for this championship, you have to have a great year. To be one of the 30 best players on our TOUR and make it to this tournament is an extreme accomplishment, and one of the things people may pick apart is, well, some guys can win the season long race without winning a tournament until the TOUR Championship.."- he said.

Reactions

Judging by the reactions of fans this year, most are quite happy with the new system so far.

However, it is clear that there are those who are not delighted about the changes, since in golf there are always those who are happy and those who are not.

Either way, Scottie Scheffler currently has the lead and there is a good chance that he will actually win the last playoff tournament, thus rounding off the season in a great way.
