Rory McIlroy didn't show a wide range of quality at this year's BMW Championship. After the first round, the Northern Irish golfer shot a solid 70, which placed him in even par and tied for 15th place.
Although he showed stability in his game at times, it turned out that Rory was going through a bit of a crisis on the course at certain parts of the tournament.
It can't be said that this was a bad round for him, but it is clear that a golfer of his quality can do much more.
Speaking to the media after the first round, Rory stressed that he was disappointed with his performance, but also proud because he showed character in the middle of the round, when he began to improve his game, showing that he can be an insoluble enigma for his opponents.
"Awful. Yeah, I got off to a bad start. Sort of pieced it together a little bit in the middle of the round and clawed it back to even par. But drove the ball terribly.
Then when you're sort of hitting out of the rough from the fairway bunkers here -- when I hit the fairways, I give myself chances. I need to hit more fairways the next three days."- he said.
Modifications
The popular golfer is aware that he will have to make certain modifications if he really wants to finish in a significantly better place during the second, third and fourth days.
The first day should not be a problem for him at all, considering that the following rounds represent an ideal opportunity to improve his impression and try to consolidate his place, that is, to try to move towards the top.
The current leader of the tournament is Robert McIntyre, who has a three-shot advantage over second-place Tommy Fleetwood.
"Yeah, I think a little bit of work on the range, committing to a shot shape maybe a little bit more. Seemed like when I tried to hit the driver left to right today, it was better. Maybe just stick with that over the course of the week and try to dial that in.
But yeah, definitely just hit to hit a few more fairways."
