Victoria Mboko confirmed what many had thought and decided to pull out of the Cincinnati Open to address her wrist injury.
On Thursday, the Canadian teenage sensation - who was ranked at No. 85 when Montreal started - completed her astonishing run by beating Naomi Osaka 2-6 6-4 6-1 to lift her maiden WTA crown at none other but the WTA 1000 level.
During a semifinal marathon versus Elena Rybakina, Mboko injured her right wrist after a fall. Still, the 18-year-old managed to play out and win the Rybakina match, before doing the same against Osaka. However, the state of the wrist is not perfect since he felt it during the Montreal final.
In her post-final press conference, the Canadian - who improved 51 spots and is now ranked at No. 24- was asked directly whether she would go to Cincinnati, where she was slated to meet Diana Shnaider in her opening match.
Mboko: It's very close and sudden for me to go Cincinnati... I want to takre care of my wrist
"Yeah, I'm not planning on playing Cincinnati at the moment. I just want to take care of my wrist a little bit right now, and I think it's just very close and sudden for me to go there and play again I think in, like, two days. I think I'm just going to sit out on that one and prepare for the upcoming tournaments," the teenage sensation explained.
The US Open is starting in 16 days and that's when Mboko will return to action. Before kicking off her preparation for her maiden appearance at Flushing Meadows, the reigning Montreal champion plans to relax by spending some quality time with her close ones.
"I mean, for the next couple of days I would like to spend more time with my friends and family and just kind of relax a little bit. We'll see after," the 18-year-old noted.
