Ben Shelton took exception with one Flavio Cobolli act during their Toronto Masters match and it led to the two engaging in a heated discussion moments after the match.
In the Toronto round-of-16, the No. 4 seedmade a positive and won the opening set before losing the second set and falling down by a break in the third set. However, the American tennis star refused to quit, recovering from a 3-5 third-set deficit to force a tie-break - which he dominated to complete a 6-4 4-6 7-6 (1) win over the 13th-seeded Italian.
While Shelton had all the reasons to be thrilled - considering the escape he made on the court - there was one thing that bothered him and he wanted to resolve it. And he confronted Cobolli - the two argued for over a minute - before walking away from each other.
Shelton explains what Cobolli did that made him annoyed
When asked to explain what happened on the court, the American shared that he wasn't happy with one of the gestures made by Shelton toward the end of the third set. Also, the 2023 US Open semifinalist revealed that he and the Italian tennis player met in the locker room to privately discuss what happened. After talking it out, the American realized that the gesture in question wasn't pointed at him so everything ended well.
Yeah, we talked about it. He said (the gesture) wasnt towards me. Were good. We talked about it in the locker room, so Im not going to answer any more questions about that. Theres no story, were good, thats it, so, thanks," Shelton said.
For a place in the Toronto semifinal, the fourth-seeded American will battle against Alex de Minaur.
