Don Nelson made a rare public appearance over the weekend, popping up at the NBA Finals to accept the Chuck Daly Lifetime Achievement Award.

The 85-year-old Hall of Famer has been keeping a low profile since retiring back in 2010, but he wasnt going to miss this one.

Nelson, who finished his coaching career with 1,335 wins (more than anyone at the time) held the top spot on the NBAs all-time wins list for over a decade.

Gregg Popovich eventually passed him in March 2022, but Nelsons legacy is still cemented in league history.

Hes one of just two coaches to notch at least 250 victories with three separate teams: Milwaukee, Golden State, and Dallas. He also had a short stint in New York, but his longest run came with the Mavericks, where he coached from 1997 to 2005.

Before Game 2 of the Finals between the Thunder and Pacers tipped off on Sunday, Nelson took a moment to weigh in on the Luka Doni trade that shocked everyone earlier this season and he didnt hold back.

I want everybody to know Im wearing Lukas shoes, his new shoes from Nike and Im wearing them in protest for the trade from Dallas, Nelson said. I think it was a tremendous mistake by the Dallas franchise to trade him. I want everybody to know that.

Since calling it a career, Nelsons been living in Hawaii and, by all accounts, loving the quiet life. This weekend marked his first time leaving the island in seven years.

Rick Carlisle, Pacers coach and president of the National Basketball Coaches Association, paid tribute to Nelsons impact on the sport.

History has already reflected Don Nelsons staggering contributions as a cutting-edge innovator and visionary of the NBA game, Carlisle said, via ESPN. Back in the 80s and 90s, he made teams adjust to historic pace, liberal 3-point shooting, inverted offense and disruptive defensive schemes. All this while establishing himself as one of the most compelling personalities in all of professional sports.
