Gail Kim was set to step into the ring as the special guest referee for the NWA World Womens Championship match between Kenzie Paige and WWEs Natalya at the Crockett Cup on May 17 in Philadelphia. However, just hours before the event, Kim took to Twitter to announce she wouldnt be able to make it.
I am sorry to have to announce that I cannot make it to the Crockett Cup today in Philadelphia. I hate to let the fans down and most of all Nattie and Kenzie but post cruise last Sunday, I went down hard and have been suffering severe flu/covid symptoms, Kim wrote.
Kim expressed her disappointment over missing the event, as she was looking forward to being the referee for the womens title match. I did not want to announce in hopes to make a full recovery by today, but I am still experiencing a high fever and have had to cancel this am, she continued.
She promised to make it up to the NWA fans and CEO Billy Corgan in the future. I am so disappointed as I was looking forward to being the referee for the womens championship title today. Wishing the best of luck to everyone in Philadelphia today and especially the ladies who I know will be bringing down 2300 Arena tonight!
Kim was released from TNA Wrestling in March after 14 years with the company, making her planned role as a referee at the Crockett Cup a major moment for her post-TNA career. Now, with Kim out, the NWA must scramble to find a replacement official for the heated showdown between Paige and Natalya.
