Trent Alexander-Arnold is in line to pocket a huge signing bonus worth around 20m (17m) from Real Madrid thanks to the nature of his imminent arrival, according to a report in Spain.
The right-back's decision to leave Anfield has finally been confirmed by both player and club. And while there is no announcement about his next destination as the 2024/25 campaign is still ongoing, the widely held belief is that Alexander-Arnold will be joining Madrid at some point this summer.
The England international has justified his decision publicly, insisting that taking on a new challenge was the major driving force behind his Liverpool exit this summer. It has also been reported that he was offered, but turned down, a significant pay rise from the Reds.
But even if money wasn't the source of motivation - and he could have been handsomely rewarded at home - signing for Real Madrid is still going to be incredibly lucrative for Alexander-Arnold.
According to MARCA, Alexander-Arnold will be entitled to a signing-on bonus worth a tidy 20m (17m). This will be spread over several years and supplement a competitive base wage.
It has previously been reported that a proposed five-year contract at the Bernabeu will up Alexander-Arnold's existing salary by the equivalent of 4m (3.2m) per season, to around 15m, albeit still quite a bit less than Vinicius Junior, Kylian Mbappe and Jude Bellingham.
When a high profile player moves as a free agent, the absence of a transfer fee allows the new club to offer a substantial bonus they wouldn't ordinarily have the means for.
Mbappe's signing bonus was vastly superior to that of Alexander-Arnold. The Frenchman banked a reported 150m across the length of his contract. In other words, an extra 30m each season on top of a 15m base salary, that will therefore account for the majority of his annual pay.
